June 2003
| Richard's Officially Opens |
 |
Savannah's Coastal Center for Developmental Services celebrated the grand opening of Richard’s, its newly remodeled snack bar on Wednesday, June 4, 2003.
Named after longtime snack bar manager Richard Bradham, Richard’s got the new name and a new look during a recent remodeling project at CCDS. Located in the cafeteria in the site’s Chatham Industries Building, the snack bar provides employees with a variety of snacks and beverages throughout the day.
Bradham began his career at CCDS in August 1972, and started working in the snack bar in the late 1980's. In 1999, he was appointed to the CCDS Board of Directors and has maintained an active role in guiding the services that he and others receive. Bradham also takes an active role in the Employee Association, an agency-based group which operates the snack bar and schedules recreational events.
The grand opening celebration – complete with a ribbon-cutting – was attended by the consumers, staff, and board members of CCDS. Richard’s sister, brother, sister-in-law, and their children were also in attendance and participated in the luncheon afterward with board members.
A story on Richard Bradham's success written by reporter Dana Clark Felty is scheduled to run in the Savannah Morning News during the second week of June.
| Lights! Camera! Nathan! |
 |
Opportunities to light up the silver screen don’t happen often for the average person, but for Nathan, this may be just the beginning of many. Nathan Hoyt, a veteran of several local stage productions (e.g., Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Fiddler on the Roof) was offered a chance to be an extra in the upcoming film Undertow which shot several scenes in the Savannah area.
"It’s a story set in rural Georgia about two runaways who bond with people on their journey," explained Cindy Burns, CCDS Employment Specialist, who accompanied Hoyt from the casting interview to the set on the day of filming. "Nathan plays a homeless person, who meets up with the stars of the movie." The movie stars Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama) and Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding), and Kristen Stewart (Panic Room).
Careful not to let the glitz and glamour control his life too much, Hoyt is keeping his daily job in the Coastal Mailing Source. Still, he remains more than ready for the next opportunity should Hollywood come to Savannah again.
| Lanier Joins Long List of Partners Grads |
 |
May 10th marked graduation day for JoAnn Lanier. Her role as Savannah's sole participant in this year's Atlanta-based Partners in Policymaking came to a close in a festive graduation ceremony.
Nine months of home projects, meetings with legislators, extensive advocacy training, and networking were well worth the one-weekend-a-month commitment, according to the new graduate. Lanier commented that she received a standing ovation on the delivery of her final project prior to graduation.
Coastal Center for Developmental Services began participating in Partners in Policymaking in 1996 and has assisted eight individuals in their journey through the course. A few individuals have already submitted applications for next year.

| Specialty Printing Readies Itself For Returning Troops |
 |
The Army Rangers have already returned home from the Middle East, and hope is that remaining members of the 3rd Infantry Division will be making their trip home by summer's end.
To make sure Savannah is ready for the return, CCDS has 3 themed designs available for families, friends, and the general public.
The popular My Soldier© shirt was designed by CCDS Service Coordinator Amy Harvey, whose husband is serving in the war. In the past 2 months, she has sold over 300 shirts to groups of soldiers' family members at Hunter AAF, Ft. Stewart and out-of-state. The Proud To Be An American© design from the mid-1990's is also available for print again.
Last but not least, Specialty Printing's own AOur Troops. Our Heroes© shirt is being finalized for upcoming returns and celebrations.
Specialty Printing is also making buttons displaying soldiers' pictures, which have become quite popular. Buttons with the three aforementioned designs will also be available for print.
